4 Ways Mindfulness is Beneficial in the Workplace

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a technique where you focus on being aware of what you’re sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. In our everyday lives, we may spend too much time planning, problem-solving, or thinking negative thoughts – which could lead us to experience extreme stress. Practicing mindfulness exercises can help you refocus your thinking and engage with the world around you. So, you may be wondering, What are some examples of mindfulness exercises? There are many simple ways to practice mindfulness. Some examples include:

  • Paying attention- In a busy world it may be difficult to slow down from time to time. Try to take a moment to take in your environment with all of your senses — touch, sound, sight, smell and taste. For example, next time you go on a walk, make sure you smell the flowers and feel the air against your skin!

  • Living in the moment- Try to intentionally bring attention to everything you do and find the joy in simple things.

  • Accepting yourself- Treat yourself as the most valuable asset in your life.

  • Focusing on your breathing- When you have negative thoughts, try to focus on your breath as it moves in and out of your body. Sitting and breathing for even just a minute can help.

The goal of mindfulness is to wake up to the inner structure of our mental and emotional processes. That being said, there are plenty of ways that mindfulness can be beneficial in the workplace.

Here are 4 benefits of mindfulness in the workplace:

1. Mindfulness improves interpersonal communication skills

Interpersonal skills are the skills required to effectively communicate, interact, and work with other people and in groups. Studies have found that practicing mindfulness boosts compassion and empathy which cultivates a state of openness towards others. As a result, mindfulness can pave the way for better communication skills among employees.

Examples of interpersonal skills that mindfulness can significantly improve are:

  • Active listening

  • Teamwork

  • Dependability

  • Leadership

  • Motivation

  • Patience

Mindfulness will help you focus on situations at hand, so when you are interacting with others, you can be fully present in the conversation. Most jobs require a level of interpersonal communication to maintain employee cooperation and meeting specific goals. If improving your communication skill is a goal for yourself, practicing mindfulness can be an effective way to start!

2. Mindfulness reduces stress and anxiety

When you feel stressed or anxious, it is easy to lose track of your thoughts and process. However, when you are mindful, you become aware of those things and why you are feeling that way. This is a great practice to help regulate emotions and shifting your focus to something that will alleviate your stress and anxiety. Intense stress responses can be reduced by being mindful in the following 8 ways:

  1. Becoming more aware of your thoughts– Mindfulness makes it easier to step back from your current thoughts and not take them so literally. As a result, your stress response is not initiated before observing your thoughts.

  2. You do not immediately react to a situation– Instead, you are giving yourself the moment to pause and come up with the best logical solution.

  3. Being more aware and sensitive to the needs of your body– You may notice things your body may require earlier on and can then take appropriate action.

  4. You are more aware of the emotions of others– As your empathy and emotional intelligence rises, you are less likely to get into conflict.

  5. Reducing activity in the part of your brain called the Amygdala– The Amygdala is central to switching on your stress response, so actively practicing mindfulness can reduce your background level of stress.

  6. The ability to focus better– You will be able to complete your work more efficiently, which will give a greater sense of well-being and lowering your stress response.

Mindfulness in the workplace can decrease employee stress, which boosts productivity and enhances well-being. If you are feeling stressed or anxious throughout the workday, take some time to do a guided mindful meditation. You may find that your thoughts slow down and the tension in your body is released.

3. Mindfulness enhances overall mood and well-being

When you practice mindfulness on a regular basis, you will become more engaged in the present moment and worry less about what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow. Furthermore, with less stress and anxiety, you will have a better regulated mood. Day to day tasks will become simpler, communication will be smoother, and you will likely find that you are happier at work. You will be able to observe negative thoughts and push them to the side which then improves your mood and well-being. Regardless of your occupation, starting your day with mindful meditation and practicing mindfulness throughout the day can help improve your performance, mood, and work-life.

4. Mindfulness builds self-confidence

Everyone has something about themselves that they may doubt. It is natural for most people to have something they are self-conscious about. Focusing too much on self-doubt can effect your performance level at work. If your self-esteem is causing issues at work or playing a role in your performance, mindfulness is something you should implement in your daily life!

Studies have shown that mindfulness techniques can help improve self-compassion and self-image. This can help you gather your thoughts, be more organized, and being more proud of your accomplishments, even if they are small. When you begin to see these positive results, your self-confidence will likely increase along with your performance level at work. If you are constantly doubting your abilities, give mindfulness a go!

As you spend time practicing mindfulness, you will probably find yourself feeling more thoughtful, calmer, and more patient. These shifts in your experience are likely to generate changes at work and in other parts of your life!
