Working from home is the new normal for many people. Depending on who you ask, it is either a much needed blessing, or a complete curse. If you are struggling working from home, hang in there!
Here are our top tips to make your experience better.
1. Stick to a Routine.
One of the most difficult things to tackle when working from home is that a schedule can often be extremely hard to follow. When personal and work lives merge together, it becomes a challenge to make time for each independently. Sticking to a schedule can help create balance and make the whole situation a lot more peaceful.
TIPS FOR A GOOD SCHEDULE
-
Keep times similar for each day so that you can establish an effective routine.
-
Set times for 15 minute breaks throughout the day.
-
Talk with your co-workers and work together to stay on track.
2. Keep Talking. Go to meetings and socialize!
Working from home can make it much easier to stop talking with co-workers and to isolate yourself. If you find yourself working remotely, make sure to keep communicating with co-workers. Communication is essential in any position, and will help you to make sure that all tasks are accomplished quickly and correctly. Besides this, take time to socialize casually with co-workers as well.
We are all missing each other and simply setting aside 15 minutes for coffee can make a huge difference! Rely on your colleagues for support during these difficult times!
“Connecting with people boosts our mood and our morale, and friendships provide us with the emotional and psychological strength to deal with whatever comes our way — whether an exciting opportunity, a challenge, or a crisis.”
– Annie McKee, PhD
3. Get out of the house (safely).
Regardless of proper scheduling and communication, working from home can be extremely stressful for a lot of people. It is very important to get out of the house and take breaks every day to ensure that you stay mentally happy and healthy. Even though the world is on lock-down, there are many safe things that you can do to keep from going stir crazy!
SAFE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
-
Go for a drive.
-
Walk around your favorite park.
-
Go camping in the backyard.
-
Plant a garden.
-
Bike around your neighborhood.
-
Go hiking and take photos.
-
Take a remote fitness class outside.
-
Go fishing.
4. Go easy on yourself.
The most important thing to remember when working from home is that it will be a learning experience. This is an unprecedented time in the workplace and no one can account for the challenges that will arise. Remember to go easy on yourself and realize that everything will get easier with time!
“Successfully working from home is a skill, just like programming, designing or writing. It takes time and commitment to develop that skill.”
-Alex Turnbull, CEO
This is going to be a challenging transition for all of us, but if we stay positive it will be an incredible learning experience! We are all in this together!
